Overcoming challenges
The brief, and how we landed it
The challenge
The site sits 90 minutes from the nearest port of entry over unpaved roads, and summer delivery meant crates would cross 50-degree desert heat. The designer specified travertine-clad columns 3.2 m tall for the pergolas — too fragile to ship as single pieces. Local sourcing quotes for hammam stone were inconsistent in grade and the owner refused to accept the risk.
How we delivered
Each pergola was engineered as laminated timber segments dowelled around a concealed stainless post, so no single crate exceeded 220 kg. Crates were specified with heat-stable lining and moisture barriers after a transit simulation. All hammam stone was selected, sealed and cut in our factory, with batch photos signed off by the designer before crating.

Value engineering on this project
Splitting each 3.2 m pergola into dowelled segments cut crating volume by 35% and removed the specialist oversized-transport quote on the desert leg. Hammam benches were re-specified from solid stone to stone-clad waterproof cores, halving weight and cost. Pre-agreed setting-out templates let the local contractor pour foundation pads before the crates arrived, avoiding a return visit.
