Sintered Stone vs Marble: cost and durability compared

Of all the material questions that reach our quoting desk, one returns more than any other: should this surface be marble or sintered stone? On a drawing, both read as stone. On a hotel floor, in a spa, on a bar top that sees 400 covers a night, they behave very differently. Here is the comparison we walk procurement teams through, with the numbers attached.

What the two materials actually are

Marble is a metamorphic limestone, mostly calcite. It sits at 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, with a density around 2,700 kg/m³ and water absorption typically between 0.1 and 0.5 percent. Calcite reacts with acid: lemon juice, wine, vinegar and most bathroom cleaners will etch a polished marble surface within minutes. That chemical softness is also what gives marble its depth — light penetrates a few millimetres into the stone before reflecting, which is why no printed or engineered surface fully reproduces it. Every slab is geologically unique, and book-matching two slabs from the same block remains one of the strongest gestures available to a lobby designer.

Sintered stone is an engineered slab: quartz, feldspar, silica and mineral pigments compacted under more than 30,000 tonnes of pressure and fired at roughly 1,200 degrees Celsius — in effect, thousands of years of geology compressed into a few hours. The result is a non-porous surface with water absorption below 0.1 percent, a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7, full UV stability, and heat resistance to about 300 degrees. Slabs run up to 3,200 × 1,600 mm, in thicknesses of 3, 6, 12 and 20 mm, which opens applications marble cannot reach, from 3 mm door skins to full-height seamless wall cladding.

Durability and maintenance in contract use

On scratch resistance there is no contest: a key, a plate or a suitcase wheel that leaves a permanent mark on marble leaves nothing on sintered stone. On staining, the gap widens further — marble in food and beverage service needs sealing every 6 to 12 months, and even a sealed surface will etch. Sintered stone needs neither sealing nor special cleaners; standard housekeeping chemicals are safe on it.

Weight matters more than most spec sheets admit. A 12 mm sintered slab weighs about 28 kg/m²; a 20 mm marble slab about 54 kg/m². On wall cladding, elevator cabin linings and large vanity tops, that difference halves the structural load and simplifies both the substrate and the fixing schedule. The trade-off is impact behaviour: thin sintered slabs are stiffer but more brittle at exposed edges, so corners need correct substrate support. For large wall panels we bond 12 mm slabs to aluminium honeycomb backers, which keeps the assembly flat, light and replaceable panel by panel.

Marble still wins where time is an asset rather than a liability: low-traffic floors that can develop patina, heritage interiors, and any surface guests are meant to touch and feel. A bar front in book-matched Calacatta does something no engineered slab does, and in the right position it is worth its maintenance budget.

Cost over the life of the project

On supply price, mid-range marble of the Carrara class runs roughly USD 60 to 120 per m²; premium stones such as Calacatta or Statuario start around USD 300 per m² and climb fast with slab size and vein quality. Sintered stone in an equivalent visual runs USD 40 to 90 per m². Fabrication cost is comparable, though sintered stone machines faster and nests with less waste. On a recent 400 m² feature wall, switching the specified Calacatta to a sintered equivalent saved roughly USD 95,000 in material alone — before counting the lighter substrate and simpler fixings.

Then add the maintenance line. Marble in a public area typically needs re-sealing annually and professional re-polishing every few years; over a ten-year renovation cycle that programme often exceeds the original material saving. Sintered stone is close to zero-maintenance. Our rule of thumb for specifiers: put marble where guests touch it and time adds value; put sintered stone where the abuse is — vanity tops, bar counters, elevator linings, restaurant tables. Most projects we deliver use both, and the value engineering exercise is deciding which surface goes where.
